Family Law Services
Child Support helps ensure children continue to benefit from both parents’ financial support after separation or divorce. The amount payable can depend on income, parenting arrangements, the number of children and additional expenses, which can make the calculation more complex than it first appears.
Child Support
Parents have a legal obligation to support their children financially. In Alberta, the rules used to determine Child Support depend on the family’s circumstances and whether the matter falls under federal or provincial legislation.
At Richmond Tymchuk Family Law LLP, our lawyers help parents understand how Child Support applies to their situation, determine the appropriate amount and address issues involving income, parenting arrangements and additional expenses.
01
For divorcing or divorced spouses, Child Support is generally determined under the Federal Child Support Guidelines. In other family law situations, Alberta’s Family Law Act and Alberta Child Support Guidelines may apply. Alberta has adopted the federal Child Support tables for calculating basic support amounts.
The basic table amount generally considers the paying parent’s income, the number of children being supported and the applicable province or territory. The federal government also provides a 2025 Child Support Table Look-Up for estimating basic support amounts.
02
Not every Child Support matter can be resolved by looking at a table. Issues such as self-employment, fluctuating income, unemployment, shared or split parenting arrangements and higher incomes can require a closer review of the financial circumstances.
Our lawyers can review financial disclosure, help determine the appropriate guideline income, and advise when there is disagreement about the Child Support amount that should be paid.
03
In addition to the basic monthly amount, Child Support may include special or extraordinary expenses, often called section 7 expenses. These may include certain childcare costs, health-related expenses, post-secondary education and qualifying extracurricular or educational expenses.
Determining which expenses qualify and how to share them can become a point of disagreement. Richmond Tymchuk Family Law LLP can help you understand which expenses may apply and how to address responsibility for those costs.
04
Child Support is not always fixed permanently. Changes in income, parenting arrangements or a child’s circumstances may create a reason to review or vary an existing support amount.
Alberta also operates a Child Support Recalculation Program that can recalculate eligible Child Support orders as income changes. Updated federal Child Support tables came into effect on October 1, 2025, and may also affect the amount payable in some cases.
Whether you are establishing Child Support for the first time, reviewing an existing arrangement or dealing with a disagreement over income or expenses, Richmond Tymchuk Family Law LLP can help you understand your rights and responsibilities and work toward a fair, practical resolution.
